How Do I Know If I Have An Emergency?

Avulsions, or teeth being knocked out in other words, are a very common dental emergency and are something we deal with on a regular basis. Every year, more than 5 million teeth are lost to sports related injuries alone in the US, so knocked-out teeth are certainly something we are always ready for and able to fix. A chipped tooth, where a portion of the tooth has been knocked off after an impact, can be treated as an emergency as well as a lost crown or even injuries to the cheek, tongue or lips. In fact, any form of toothache you may need treatment for should not be ignored, you should seek help immediately.

Here we offer some quick advice for dental emergencies, before you come to us:

  • Knocked-out teeth – Keep the tooth moist, try placing it back in the socket without touching the root if you can and if not, place it in milk or in your mouth between the cheek and the gums until you get to us.
  • Cracked or chipped teeth – Rinse the mouth with warm water and use cold compresses on the face to keep down swelling.
For toothaches – Rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area until you see us.

Remember to wear a mouthguard when participating in contact sports and avoid attempting to chew extremely hard foods such as popcorn kernels or hard candy as these can easily crack your teeth. Prevention is better than cure after all!
